Ten onsen towns worth the train in 2026, what a soak and a night cost at each, the ryokan-or-hotel call, and the rules that begin at the washing tap.
1What counts as an onsen
温泉 has a legal definition, and it is narrower than the English word suggests. Under the 温泉法 of 1948, water counts as an onsen when it leaves the ground at 25°C or hotter. Failing that, one of nineteen listed substances will do: 1,000 mg of dissolved solids per kg, 250 mg of free carbon dioxide, 1 mg of lithium.
療養泉 is the tier above, kept for water intended to treat a condition. It clears a higher bar: 1,000 mg/kg of dissolved solids, or 1,000 mg of carbon dioxide, 20 mg of total iron, 2 mg of total sulphur, or 111 becquerel of radon.
Neither test follows the water after it leaves the ground. A hotel can reheat it, dilute it or run it through a loop and still print 天然温泉 on the curtain. 源泉掛流し is the label for water that enters at source temperature and runs straight out, and it is the one line worth reading on the bath's own sign.

2Ryokan or hotel, in one table
The building decides the price and the shape of the evening, and the two words are not interchangeable.
| Ryokan 旅館 | Onsen hotel 温泉ホテル | |
|---|---|---|
| What the rate covers | Per person, dinner and breakfast included | Per room, meals usually extra |
| Dinner | Served in the room or a dining room, at a fixed hour | A buffet or a restaurant you book separately |
| The bath | Often 源泉掛流し, and often the reason the building exists | A large 大浴場, sometimes heated city water |
| Bedding | Futon on tatami, laid out while you eat | A bed, usually twin |
| The door | Closing time, and the kitchen stops before it | Room key, no curfew |
| Book it for | The food and the water | Tattoos, children, late arrivals, one night |
A ryokan quotes per person with two meals and an onsen hotel quotes per room; the figures are not the same shape, and the per-person rate and capacity rules decide what four people actually pay.

The 21:00 cut-off most ryokan keep is a booking problem rather than a mystery, and the same guide takes it line by line.
3What a soak costs
Day bathing is the cheap half of an onsen trip, and each operator publishes its own price. These are the 2026 numbers for the ten towns below.
| Town | Bath | Adult | Child | What the price is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Noboribetsu | 夢元さぎり湯 | ¥550 | ¥180 | Day bath, 09:00–21:00, desk closes 20:30 |
| Ginzan | しろがね湯 | ¥500 | ¥200 | The town's public bath; hours are not published |
| Nyuto | 鶴の湯 | ¥700 | — | 10:00–15:00; outdoor bath out of use on Mondays |
| Hakone | 箱根湯寮 | ¥1,700–2,200 | ¥1,000 | Weekday to weekend; private baths cost more |
| Kusatsu | 熱乃湯 | ¥700 | ¥350 | The 湯もみ show, six times a day |
| Gero | 下呂発温泉博物館 | ¥400 | ¥200 | Museum with a bath; children to primary school age |
| Arima | 金の湯 | ¥800 | ¥350 | ¥650 on weekdays; 銀の湯 is ¥700 and ¥550 |
| Kinosaki | 御所の湯 | ¥800 | ¥400 | Same price at all six public baths; children from 3 |
| Dogo | 道後温泉本館 | ¥700 | ¥350 | Ground floor; a second-floor seat is ¥1,300 |
| Beppu | 別府地獄めぐり | ¥2,400 | ¥1,200 | Seven hells, valid the day of purchase and the next |
入湯税 is the tax that sits on top. The standard rate is ¥150 per person per day, set by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and the municipality the bath stands in charges it.
A stay pays it with the room bill, one night counting as one day. A day bath pays the town's bathing rate at the desk: Ureshino charges ¥100, and Atami waives it below ¥1,000 admission.
Three towns charge above the standard. Beppu takes ¥250 on rooms from ¥6,001 to ¥50,000 and ¥500 above that, at rates fixed on 1 April 2019. Ureshino moved to ¥250 on 1 October 2025. Atami keeps ¥150 on the bath and added a separate ¥200-a-night lodging tax on 1 April 2025.

4Washing first, and the rest of the rules
The bath is for soaking and the taps are for washing. Sit at the low shower, rinse the soap off completely, and keep the small towel out of the water.
Keep the voice down, keep hair out of the pool, and keep anything that should not get wet on the shelf. A tattoo is the bath's own call rather than a national rule, so it belongs in the booking email instead of in a guess at the door.
Photographs are worth checking twice. The Kurokawa association states plainly that photography is banned in its outdoor baths as a rule. Somebody else's evening is in the frame.
Mixed bathing survives mostly in the older mountain baths. The ヒバ千人風呂 at 酸ヶ湯 is mixed and keeps a women-only hour from 08:00 to 09:00. That hour and the ¥1,000 day-bathing price hold until 30 November 2026; from 1 December 2026 the day-bathing window shortens to 09:00–16:00 and the adult price goes to ¥1,500.
A private bath, 貸切風呂, takes the tattoo question and the crowd out of the plan in one booking. Many ryokan offer one, usually booked by the hour, so ask when you book.
5The ten, by region
Ten towns, grouped by the airport or the city you arrive from. Each one carries the reason to pick it, the run in, the soak price and the one number that is specific to the place.
Hokkaido
Noboribetsu Onsen 登別温泉
Nine 泉質 come out of the ground inside this one town, and the crater they come from is a short walk from the bus stop.
地獄谷 is 450 m across and about 11 ha of bare rock with steam coming off it, and it costs nothing to walk. Its car park is ¥500 for the day and the ticket is shared with the 大湯沼 lot outside winter. 大湯沼 runs at roughly 130°C at the bottom of a 1 km loop.
The town's day bath is 夢元さぎり湯, ¥550 adult and ¥180 for children, open 09:00–21:00 with the desk closing at 20:30. 第一滝本館 sells a day visit at ¥2,500, the top of the range in this guide.
Sapporo is about 1 h 10 m by limited express, and New Chitose Airport has a direct highway bus in about an hour.

Tohoku
Ginzan Onsen 銀山温泉
One street of five-storey wooden inns with a river down the middle, and a village that caps how many people come in once the snow settles.
For 2026–27 the operator lists the regulated period as December 2026 into early March 2027; the dates are provisional until the final schedule is published.
Day visitors park at 大正ろまん館 and ride the shuttle: ¥1,300 for the 09:00–10:40 slots, ¥1,000 for 11:00–13:40 and ¥1,500 for 14:00–18:00, every 20 minutes, at the rates the operator carried over from last winter. The operator warns against walking in from 大正ろまん館, about 2 km on a winter road.
しろがね湯, the town bath, is ¥500 adult and ¥200 for primary school children and under. 和楽足湯 is free and open 06:00–22:00 all year.
The railhead is JR 大石田 on the Yamagata Shinkansen.

Nyuto Onsen 乳頭温泉郷
Seven baths in one valley, each fed from its own source, and one road in.
The 湯めぐり帖 costs ¥2,500 and the 湯めぐりマップ ¥1,000, and the association sells both to overnight guests only and takes cash. The pass is therefore an argument for booking one of the seven rather than driving in for the day.
鶴の湯 takes day bathers from 10:00 to 15:00 for ¥700, and its outdoor bath is out of use on Mondays. The association's own day-bath list is the page to read before setting out, because the days vary by inn.
JR 田沢湖駅 is the railhead, and the 羽後交通 bus marked 乳頭温泉 takes about 50 minutes. 田沢湖駅 is 2 h 55 m from Tokyo by shinkansen, 1 h 15 m from Sendai, 40 m from Morioka and 55 m from Akita.

Kanto
Hakone 箱根
The one on this list you can do out of Tokyo before lunch. A ロマンスカー from 新宿 reaches 箱根湯本 in 75 minutes at its fastest.
The 箱根フリーパス is ¥7,100 for two days and ¥7,500 for three, and it covers the transport rather than the baths. On a day visit the pass rarely pays for itself; the bath is the cost.
箱根湯寮 charges ¥1,700–1,800 on weekdays and ¥2,000–2,200 at weekends, with children at ¥1,000.

Kusatsu 草津
草津 pulls 32,300 litres a minute out of the ground, and 4,000 of those litres come up in 湯畑 in the middle of the village. The water sits at pH 2.1, which is why the bathing halls are wood and the fittings are brass.
熱乃湯 runs the 湯もみ show six times a day at ¥700 adult and ¥350 for children, and sells tickets at the counter 30 minutes before each performance. No reservations, and the counter takes cash or PayPay only. The 湯もみ体験, where a visitor takes the paddle, runs on Sundays and Mondays from 11:30 to 13:00 with the last sign-up at 12:50, for ¥300.
Getting there: 上野 by limited express to 長野原草津口 is about 2 h 33 m, then the JR bus is 25 minutes. The other way is 東京 to 軽井沢 in 1 h 10 m on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, then the bus up the mountain.

Chubu
Gero 下呂
下呂, 有馬 and 草津 are the three names the old lists agree on, and 下呂 is the one that still reads as a town rather than a resort.
The 湯めぐり手形セット is ¥2,500 for three baths, sold to guests of the member inns and valid for six months from purchase at the rate set on 1 October 2025.
下呂発温泉博物館 is the day-bath option with an explanation attached: ¥400 adult and ¥200 for primary school children, with the water treated as the exhibit.
名古屋 is about 1 h 30 m by limited express.

Kansai
Arima Onsen 有馬
Two springs with two characters, named after their colours. 金泉 is the brown one, heavy with iron and salt. 銀泉 is the carbonated one, and the 炭酸泉源 behind it sits at 18.3°C while 天神泉源 next door runs at 99.4°C.
金の湯 is ¥800 adult and ¥350 for children, or ¥650 on weekdays. 銀の湯 is ¥700 and ¥300, or ¥550 on weekdays. The two-bath ticket covers both for ¥1,200, and it is the cheapest way to decide which one you prefer.

Kinosaki Onsen 城崎
Six public baths on one source, and a town where the street traffic after dinner is everyone in yukata and geta.
Each of the six costs ¥800 adult and ¥400 for children from three up to primary school age, so the choice is about the building rather than the price. 御所の湯 is the grand one, open at 07:00 and closed at 23:00 with the last entry 30 minutes before, and shut on Thursdays. 鴻の湯 opens the same hours and shuts on Tuesdays.
ゆめぱ is the day pass for the six public baths: ¥1,500 adult and ¥750 for children, bought at the ticket window of any of them, and it admits you to every 外湯 open that day.
大阪 is 2 h 40 m on the こうのとり and 京都 2 h 20 m on the きのさき.

Beppu 別府
Eight spa districts inside one city, and the vents are the sight rather than the soak. The 別府地獄めぐり covers seven of them for ¥2,400 adult and ¥1,200 for children, valid on the day of purchase and the day after, open 08:00–17:00 with no closing days.
地獄蒸し工房 鉄輪 lets you cook your own food in the steam: ¥400 for the small steamer and ¥600 for the large, 15 minutes on the clock, then ¥200 or ¥300 for every extra 10 minutes. The building's own foot bath is free, and the kitchen closes on the third Wednesday of the month.
Beppu's 入湯税 bracket is the widest in the country: ¥250 on a room rate from ¥6,001 to ¥50,000 and ¥500 above that, at rates fixed on 1 April 2019.
由布院 is the other Kyushu base. 由布市 counts the second-largest yield and the second-largest number of sources in Japan, and the 湯の坪 street runs from the station end of town.

Dogo Onsen 道後
道後温泉 is the bath the 日本書紀 names, which puts it at the top of the Japanese written record, and 道後温泉本館 is the building that record turned into.
神の湯階下 is ¥700 adult and ¥350 for children. A second-floor seat in 神の湯 is ¥1,300 and ¥650, the 霊の湯二階席 is ¥2,000 and ¥1,000, and a visit to 又新殿, the bathroom built for the imperial family, adds ¥500 or ¥250. The annexe, 椿の湯, is ¥500 and ¥200 and opens at 06:30.

6Passes that turn three soaks into one ticket
Three of the ten towns sell a multi-bath ticket, and the small print is different every time. Kurokawa, which isn't one of the ten, sells the best-known one.
The 湯めぐり帖 at 乳頭温泉郷 is ¥2,500 plus ¥1,000 for the map, sold to overnight guests only and cash only. 下呂's 湯めぐり手形セット is ¥2,500 for three baths, valid six months.
黒川's 入湯手形 is ¥1,500 adult and ¥700 for children from three to twelve, and it buys three baths out of 25. The soaks run 08:30–21:00, the ticket lasts six months, and the association states it cannot be shared between two people. 有馬 sells the two-bath ticket for ¥1,200.
Expect the same shape each time: the ticket covers the standard baths rather than the flagship one, the soaking hours are daytime only, and the inn that sells it wants you sleeping there.
Arima Onsen is also sold as an expressway bus package from Osaka and Kobe, which bundles the round trip with the two baths. Klook KKday
7Booking the night
The room is the part of an onsen trip where the price moves most, and the meal plan moves it further than the bed.
A ryokan rate is per person and normally carries dinner and breakfast. An onsen hotel's is per room and normally does not. The same building often sells both, under two names, and the cheaper listing is the one without the food.

Source: Pexels
Put the awkward questions in the booking message rather than saving them for the arrival desk. Ask the hour you want dinner, whether the bath closes for cleaning on your date, whether the room is non-smoking, and what a tattoo means here.
The cancellation window and the arrival cut-off decide whether the booking survives a delayed flight, and the 21:00 rule most inns still keep is the one that catches people out. The hotel guide takes both line by line.
Weeknights in the same month can sit well under the weekend rate, so the date is the lever rather than the town.
8A six-line planner
- Pick the region from the airport: 登別 for a Hokkaido landing, 箱根 and 草津 off Tokyo, 有馬 and 城崎 off Kansai, 別府 and 道後 off Fukuoka.
- Count the soaks you will actually take. Two towns in three nights beats five towns in one.
- Book the ryokan first. It has fewer rooms than the train has seats.
- Put the day bath on the travel day, between the checkout and the train.
- Take a small towel. Town baths sell one at the counter; the ryokan leaves one in the room.
- Recheck the operator's page in the week you travel, for winter hours and closures.

9Questions and answers
What the rules are at the door, what the tax adds, and when the winter closures land.
Do I have to be naked in an onsen?
In the public bath, yes — swimwear is not worn, and the soap you washed with does not go in the water. A private bath (貸切風呂) is the answer if that is the block; many ryokan offer one, usually booked by the hour, so ask when you book.
Can I use an onsen with a tattoo?
That is the bath's own decision rather than a national rule, so it belongs in the booking email. A private bath takes the question off the table, and the big town baths are the likeliest to say no.
Are day baths cheaper than staying the night?
Far cheaper, and it is the reason to put a soak on the travel day. The ten towns on this page charge ¥400 to ¥2,400 for a day visit; a ryokan night costs several times that for the room and two meals on top.
What does 源泉掛流し mean?
Water that runs from the source into the bath and straight out again, with no reheating and no tap water added. It is the label to look for when the water is the reason for the trip; 天然温泉 alone only says where the water came from.
How much is the onsen tax?
¥150 per person per day is the national standard, charged by the municipality and collected by the inn with the room bill. Beppu, Ureshino and Atami charge more on a stay, and a day bath pays the town's own bathing rate: Ureshino takes ¥100, and Atami waives the tax below ¥1,000 admission.
When do the winter closures hit?
Ginzan regulates entry from December into early March, with the final dates still to be published, 酸ヶ湯 changes its hours and its price on 1 December 2026, and some outdoor baths close one day a week for cleaning all winter. Check the operator's page in the week you travel, not the week you book.
