APA Hotel in Kansai: which of the seven branches should you book?

One room, built 1,126 times, always a short walk from a station. The 11 square metres are the price; which branch you book decides what you get for them.

In one line APA runs 1,126 hotels and 141,588 rooms on one 11 m² room plan as of 1 October 2026; which branch you book decides the walk, never the size.

1The 11 m² arithmetic

APA's own counter, as of 1 October 2026, reads 1,126 hotels and 141,588 rooms. The company describes the format as a new urban hotel: a compact building on the most expensive land it can buy, close to a station. The money saved on floor area goes into the fittings a guest touches.

The standard room is that argument in one number. At Namba Ekihigashi, Shin-Osaka and both Osaka towers it's 11 m² with a 140 cm double bed. Kobe runs about 10 m². Nara is 10.9 to 11.6 m². Gion, refitted in March 2026, is the roomiest of the seven at 14 m² for a single.

Eleven square metres is a bed, a desk and a bath pod. The bed sits against one wall, an aisle runs down the other side, the desk is at the foot, and the bathroom is a moulded unit rather than a tiled room. Two people sleep in the 140 cm bed, and one of them sleeps against the wall.

2What the room gives back

The fittings are where the saved floor area went. Every room has APA's own mattress, sold as Cloud fit and as Cloud fit Grand on the higher floors. A bedside panel carries the lights, the air conditioning, a USB socket and an HDMI port for the television. The screen is 50 inches or more, and 58 inches in the twin and junior suite at Namba Ekihigashi.

APA Room Theater puts more than 200 films and shows on that screen at no charge, with the brand's own site excluding overseas properties, Kasuikyo and a few hotels. A Bollina ultra-fine-bubble shower head is fitted to every room at Nara and Kobe. The egg-shaped unit bath is APA's own design, and the company claims it uses about 20% less water than a conventional tub.

Check-in is the part that benefits most. The app's one-second check-in issues a key at a kiosk from a QR code, though only for bookings paid by card in advance. The desk handles everyone else, and checkout at the towers is a post you drop the key into.

Coin laundry runs at Namba Ekihigashi, Nara, Kobe and beside the bath at Shin-Osaka. Bags left before check-in or after checkout are held at the front desk.

3Where the compact room bites

  • Some windows don't open. Gion's Single B, 10.0 to 13.4 m², has windows fixed shut and a few that look onto a wall. The Namba tower sells 11 m² rooms marked no view in the room name.
  • The air conditioning is building-wide at both towers. The room can't be switched between heating and cooling, and the branch page states the limitation rather than leaving it to the desk.
  • Housekeeping is on request on a multi-night stay. Kobe wants the tag outside the door by 09:00; the towers list declared cleaning, which means nothing happens unless asked.
  • Two guests still means one bed. An 11 m² double is a couple's room. The twin is 14 to 18 m² depending on the branch, and that step is the one worth taking for two friends travelling together.
  • The pool is a season, not a facility. The 40th-floor pool at Namba Ekimae Tower closed for 2026 on 23 September.
  • Under-bed storage isn't universal. Nara lists it on every bed type; elsewhere it depends on the room, so check the type rather than the branch.

5Kyoto: Gion, seven minutes from the Keihan

Gion Excellent reopened in March 2026 after a refit, and it's the branch to take if the trip is Higashiyama rather than Kyoto Station. The hotel measures its own walk at seven minutes from exit 6 at Gion-Shijo, not the four minutes a booking blurb will print. From Kyoto Station the bus is the honest option: stand D2, routes 86 or 206, off at Gion.

The rooms are the largest in this set and priced as the exception. A single is 14 m² with a 120 cm bed, and the Single B drops to 10.0 to 13.4 m² with a 140 cm bed and a window that doesn't open.

Kings run 13.5 to 18 m², twins 18 m², the premier twin 24 m² and the connecting rooms 36 m². There's no public bath here, so the room is what you're paying for.

6Osaka: three branches, three different trips

Namba Ekihigashi is the Dotonbori hotel. Metro Namba exit 1 is four minutes away, Osaka-Namba four, the Nankai airport platform four from its north exit, and Nipponbashi exit 5 five minutes.

It holds 380 rooms, all non-smoking: an 11 m² standard, a 15 m² twin, a 22 m² connectable pair and a 28 m² junior suite. There's no bath, the coin laundry is on the second floor, and the 12 parking spaces are first come.

Osaka Namba Ekimae Tower is the family answer, and the only branch here where you can arrive, bathe and swim without leaving the building. JR Namba is one minute, the OCAT airport bus terminal one minute, Metro Namba exit 30 two minutes and the Nankai platform seven.

The fourth floor holds the Gen'yō-no-yu spa, an artificial spring built on kōmōseki stone, with an open-air bath, jet bath, sauna and a cool tub. It opens 15:00 to 26:00 and again 06:00 to 10:00, for guests only.

The rooms start at the same 11 m². Above that sit a 14 m² twin, a 14 m² superior with a 180 cm bed, connectable rooms of 22 and 28 m², and suites of 35 m² on the 39th floor. The building runs to 40 floors, and the top-floor pool is the reason families book it in August.

Midosuji Honmachi Ekimae Tower connects directly to exit 18 at Honmachi, three metro lines with no street to cross in the rain. The standard room is 11 m² and high-floor rooms start at the 26th.

The same Gen'yō-no-yu spa is free to guests between 15:00 and 26:00, and from 06:00. A FamilyMart sits on the second floor, the buffet runs 06:30 to 13:00, and Osaka Castle is two stops east on the Chuo line. The entrance is locked from 02:00 to 05:00, opened with the room key.

7Shin-Osaka: the day-trip base

The Shin-Osaka branch is the largest of the seven at 660 rooms, two minutes from the JR east exit and eight from the Metro platform. That's the whole proposition: Kyoto, Kobe and Hiroshima are day trips from the concourse upstairs, and the shinkansen leaves from the same building you sleep in.

It's also the only business branch here with a proper bath. The second floor holds the Gen'yō-no-yu spa, the same kōmōseki spring, with an open-air bath and a stone pot tub, plus a laundry room beside it.

Rooms run from the 11 m² standard to a 17 m² twin, a 22 m² deluxe twin, a 22 m² connecting pair and a 43 m² suite. A water server sits on every guest floor, which is a small thing until the second night.

The trade is the neighbourhood. Shin-Osaka is an interchange, not a district, so dinner means the station or a train. Book it for the transit, not for the evenings.

8Nara and Kobe: the two short stays

Nara is a one-night city, and the Kintetsu branch is built for it. Exit 4 at Kintetsu Nara is four minutes away against eight from the JR east exit, and Kintetsu is the line that reaches Nara Park on foot.

The 163 rooms are 10.9 to 11.6 m² with a 160 cm queen and under-bed storage on every bed type. Above that sit a twin at 18 m², a triple at 22 and a deluxe twin at 23. There's no parking and no bath.

Kobe Sannomiya is the dinner booking. The 202 rooms are the smallest of the group, about 10 m² for a single or double and 13 m² for a twin. The position does the work: Hanshin exit A24 is three minutes, the JR east exit five.

Hankyu is six minutes, the Port Liner four and the subway seven. Every room has the Bollina Wide Plus head, the laundry is on the ground floor, and the 30 parking spaces are first come.

9What I would book, by trip

  • One night in Osaka for Dotonbori: Namba Ekihigashi. Four minutes from the metro, four from the airport line, and you walk home from dinner.
  • Arriving at Kansai with luggage or children: Osaka Namba Ekimae Tower. OCAT is a minute away, the connecting rooms sleep four, and the bath takes the airport off you.
  • Working in Honmachi, or here for the castle: Midosuji Honmachi Ekimae Tower, for the direct exit and the convenience store downstairs.
  • Three cities in four days: Shin-Osaka. Take the 660 rooms and accept that the evening is the station.
  • Kyoto for the temples: Gion. Smaller rooms, no bath, and a lane you can photograph before the buses come.
  • Nara and Kobe: one night each, Kintetsu Nara for the park and Sannomiya for dinner.
  • Three nights or more anywhere: book the twin, not the 11 m² double. Two square metres is the difference between a base and a cupboard.

Room sizes, station walking times, check-in times and facilities here are current as of 21 October 2026. Featured room types vary within a branch, so confirm the type before booking rather than the brand.

10Questions and answers

The questions the compact room raises, answered from what each branch publishes.

How big is an APA Hotel room?

The standard room is 11 m² with a 140 cm double bed at Namba Ekihigashi, Shin-Osaka and both Osaka towers. Kobe runs about 10 m², Nara 10.9 to 11.6 m², and Kyoto Gion 14 m² for a single.

Does APA Hotel have a public bath?

Only some branches. In this Kansai group the bath is at Shin-Osaka (second floor), Osaka Namba Ekimae Tower (fourth floor) and Midosuji Honmachi Ekimae Tower. Gion, Namba Ekihigashi, Nara and Kobe have none.

What time is check-in at APA Hotel?

15:00, with checkout at 10:00, at all seven branches on this page. Plans and membership status can shift it, and the towers' own FAQ says so.

Can I leave luggage before check-in?

Yes, at the front desk before check-in and after checkout. The Osaka towers hold it for the same day only.

Is the one-second check-in available to everyone?

No. It needs the APA app and a booking paid by card in advance. Everyone else uses the kiosk or the desk.

Are APA rooms good for two people?

For a couple, yes: one 140 cm bed. For two friends, book the twin at 14 to 18 m², or a connecting pair where the branch has one.

Can I open the window in an APA room?

Not in every room. Gion's Single B has fixed windows, and the Namba tower sells rooms marked no view. Ask for a room with an opening window when the booking allows it.
