Osaka is the cheapest big city in Japan to sleep in well, and the difference between a ¥7,800 night and a ¥15,000 night is usually 100 metres of walking, not quality. Ten real hotels, priced live on 11 October 2026 for the same nights, ranked by what the money gets you.

How to read the numbers Rates were read from Booking.com search-results pages on 11 October 2026 for 2 adults, one room, in yen. Where the sample window (19–23 January 2027) was not yet bookable, Booking.com's nearest-available-date nightly price (17 January 2027) was used — the figure quoted is per night, for the room, not per person. January and February are Osaka's cheapest months, so these are low-season numbers. Walk times and room sizes come from each hotel's own access and room pages, and hotels' own sites often beat the OTAs.

2The ten, ranked

  1. 1

    Sotetsu Fresa Inn Osaka-Namba

The best location of the ten: a 1–2 minute walk from Namba Station, a modern build, and consistently high guest ratings.

    • Area Naniwa-ku, Namba
    • Station Metro Midosuji / Sennichimae Namba, Exit 7 — 1 min; Exit 5 — 2 min; Kintetsu, Hanshin and Nankai Namba all within a few minutes
    • Room priced Double (~12 m²) or twin (17 m²)
    • Rate ~¥14,500/night observed 11 Oct 2026 (¥60,135 for 4 nights, 2 adults; ¥14,482 for a single night, 17 Jan 2027) · band ¥12,000–15,000
    • Why it earns rank 1 Every Osaka plan ends in Namba, and this is the shortest walk to it. You are paying about ¥3,000–4,000 a night over the cheapest option for that walk.
  2. 2

    Toyoko Inn Osaka Namba

The Toyoko Inn formula — free breakfast, spotless rooms, one fixed price — two minutes from Namba Station.

    • Area Chuo-ku, Namba
    • Station Metro Midosuji Namba, Exit B6 — 2 min
    • Room priced Double, non-smoking, breakfast included (~12–13 m²)
    • Rate ~¥11,100/night observed 11 Oct 2026 (¥44,339 for 4 nights, 2 adults); ¥12,409 for 17 Jan 2027 and ¥18,709 for a late-November night — the clearest seasonal swing on this list · band ¥11,000–13,000
    • Why it earns rank 2 It is the safest recommendation in the city: breakfast included, everything within two minutes, and you know exactly what the room is before you land.
  3. 3

    APA Hotel Namba Ekihigashi

APA's cheap, uniform rooms four minutes from Namba Station — and its rate barely moves with the seasons.

    • Area Chuo-ku, Namba
    • Station Metro Midosuji / Sennichimae Namba, Exit 1 — 4 min; Nankai Namba and Kintetsu Nippombashi also walkable
    • Room priced Standard double 11 m² (twin 15 m²)
    • Rate ~¥10,400/night observed 11 Oct 2026 (¥42,545 for 4 nights; ¥10,364 for 17 Jan 2027 vs ¥10,310 in late November) · band ¥8,000–11,000
    • Why it earns rank 3 It is the most price-stable hotel here, which makes it the one to book when your dates land in cherry-blossom or autumn season and everything else has doubled.

  4. 4

    Comfort Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi

The best value of any mainstream chain here: Serta beds and a free breakfast buffet from around ¥7,900 a night, on Shinsaibashi's doorstep.

    • Area Chuo-ku, Shinsaibashi
    • Station Metro Midosuji Shinsaibashi, Exit 6 — 5 min; Nagahoribashi, Exit 7 — 5 min; Namba — 10 min
    • Room priced Economy double 13 m² (twin 17 m²), breakfast included
    • Rate ~¥7,900/night observed 11 Oct 2026 (¥31,500 for 4 nights; ¥8,636 for a single night, 17 Jan 2027) · band ¥8,000–9,000
    • Why it earns rank 4 It is the cheapest verified chain double in the city at 13 m² — bigger than APA's room and cheaper than everything else on the list. It loses to the top three only on the last two minutes of walking.
Shinsaibashi-suji arcade — rank 4 opens near its north end; rank 7 is a few blocks we

  5. 5

    Super Hotel Namba Nipponbashi

Next to Kuromon Market and a short walk from Dotonbori, with free breakfast and a natural hot-spring bath.

    • Area Chuo-ku, Nippombashi
    • Station Metro Sakaisuji / Sennichimae and Kintetsu Nipponbashi, Exit 5 — 1–2 min
    • Room priced Double or twin (Super Hotel standard, ~12 m²), breakfast included
    • Rate ~¥11,500/night observed 11 Oct 2026 (¥45,927 for 4 nights; ¥11,582 for 17 Jan 2027) · band ¥11,000–12,000
    • Why it earns rank 5 For a food-led trip this is the best-placed hotel on the list: Kuromon for breakfast, Dotonbori for dinner, bath and buffet included.
  6. 6

    Via Inn Abeno Tennoji

Two minutes from JR Tennoji — the best rail hub south of Namba, and the cheapest way to be on the Loop Line.

    • Area Abeno-ku, Tennoji
    • Station JR Tennoji south exit / Exit 14 — 2 min; Metro Midosuji Tennoji and Hankai Tennoji nearby
    • Room priced Double or twin (Via Inn standard)
    • Rate ~¥10,100/night observed 11 Oct 2026 (¥40,218 for 4 nights; ¥9,509 for 17 Jan 2027) · band ¥9,000–10,000
    • Why it earns rank 6 Tennoji gives you the Loop Line, the Midosuji Line, the airport connection and Shinsekai on foot — and it costs less than the Namba hotels. The trade is that it is not Namba.
The Tennoji end: Via Inn Abeno Tennoji (rank 6) stands beside Tennoji Station, and Ho

  7. 7

    Henn na Hotel Osaka Namba

Unusually spacious twins for the price, in America-mura, with dinosaur-robot self check-in. The best room-per-yen on the list for two people.

    • Area Chuo-ku, Shinsaibashi / America-mura
    • Station Metro Midosuji Shinsaibashi — 6 min; Namba — 5–6 min
    • Room priced Twin 16.66–17.1 m²
    • Rate ~¥12,300/night observed 11 Oct 2026 (¥49,356 for 4 nights; ¥11,582 for 17 Jan 2027) · band ¥11,500–12,500
    • Why it earns rank 7 A 17 m² twin at this price is rare in Osaka, and the check-in gimmick is genuinely fun once. It ranks below the Namba cluster only because of the walk.
  8. 8

Super Hotel Osaka Natural Hot Springs

The only hotel on this list with its own natural hot spring, at a price that still fits the budget segment.

    • Area Nishi-ku, Awaza (north of Namba, toward Umeda)
    • Station Metro Sennichimae Awaza, Exit 9 — 5 min
    • Room priced Double or twin (Super Hotel standard), breakfast included
    • Rate ~¥12,400/night observed 11 Oct 2026 (¥49,636 for 4 nights; ¥11,709 for 17 Jan 2027) · band ¥11,000–12,500 · guest rating 8.7
    • Why it earns rank 8 If you were going to pay for a spa or a sento evening, this hotel already includes one. It is the wrong base for Dotonbori, and the right one for Umeda.
  9. 9

    First Cabin Midosuji Namba

Not a private room, but the cheapest bed directly underneath Namba Station, with a large bath and a sauna.

    • Area Chuo-ku, Namba
    • Station Metro Midosuji Namba, Exit 13 — 1 min, by direct underground link
    • Room priced First Class or Premium Class cabin (capsule)
    • Rate ~¥9,300/night observed 11 Oct 2026 (¥37,309 for 4 nights; ¥10,882 for 17 Jan 2027) · band ¥9,000–11,000
    • Why it earns rank 9 Solo travellers who want a locked cabin and a bath under the station do well here; two people should price it against the Comfort double, which is cheaper for a real room.
  10. 10

    Hotel Chuo Oasis

The cheapest private double on the list, two minutes from Dobutsuen-mae Station and Tsutenkaku — in Osaka's grittiest district.

    • Area Nishinari-ku, Shin-Imamiya
    • Station Metro Midosuji / Sakaisuji Dobutsuen-mae, Exits 2 and 4 — 2 min; JR Shin-Imamiya east exit — 3 min
    • Room priced Double or twin (budget business hotel)
    • Rate ~¥7,800/night observed 11 Oct 2026 (¥31,273 for 4 nights; ¥7,818 for 17 Jan 2027) · band ¥7,500–8,000 · guest rating 7.8
    • Why it earns rank 10 On price alone it wins the page. On everything else it is tenth — see the safety note below before you book it for a first trip.

3Shin-Imamiya and Nishinari: what you are booking

The two cheapest hotels on this page — and most of the cheapest beds in Osaka — sit in Nishinari-ku, around Shin-Imamiya and Dobutsuen-mae. This is Japan's largest day-labourer and homeless district (Airin, Kamagasaki). It is confronting rather than dangerous: reported crime in the area has fallen for years, and the long-standing traveller consensus is that the blocks around the station are fine day and night while the southern Airin side is the part to skip.

Practical version: book a hotel within about five minutes of the station on a main street, on the second floor or above, and do not wander the Airin or Tobita alleys late at night. If you are a solo woman, a family, or simply on a first trip, Tennoji at rank 6 costs about ¥2,000 more a night for a normal neighbourhood and the same rail access — take it.

4What budget actually buys

  • 11 m² at ¥10,400 — APA Hotel Namba Ekihigashi's standard double is a 140 cm bed with an aisle you turn sideways in, plus a unit bath.
  • 13 m² at ¥7,900 — Comfort Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi's economy double is the sweet spot of this page: bigger than APA's and cheaper than everything else.
  • 17 m² at ¥12,300 — Henn na Hotel's twin, two 97 cm beds, the roomiest thing here under ¥13,000.
  • Under ¥8,000 you are in Shin-Imamiya, in a capsule, or out of season. Osaka's floor for a real private double is roughly ¥7,500 in low season.

5When Osaka is cheap, and when it is not

  • Cheapest: January and February, when rates can fall to about half the spring and autumn peaks. June, the rainy season, is the next-cheapest window.
  • Most expensive: late March to mid April (cherry blossom), Golden Week in late April and early May, mid-November to early December (autumn foliage) and the New Year run-up.
  • Business hotels barely follow the seasons; USJ-area and luxury hotels swing hard. Our own check on 11 October 2026: Toyoko Inn Osaka Namba was ¥12,409 for 17 January 2027 against ¥18,709 for a late-November night — a 51% uplift — while APA Hotel Namba Ekihigashi was flat at ¥10,364 versus ¥10,310.
  • The Expo effect has faded. Osaka's limited-service hotel average daily rate peaked around ¥13,450 in September 2025 and settled near ¥9,800–10,800 by mid-2026, which is why a January 2027 double is cheap by Japanese big-city standards.

6The accommodation tax you will pay on top

Osaka Prefecture charges an accommodation tax per person per night on the room-only fee, at these rates for stays from 1 September 2025:

A compact Japanese business-hotel room: desk, kettle, TV and mini-fridge
Inside a Toyoko Inn room — this one near Hakata Station. Desk, kettle, wall-mounted dryer, fridge under the desk, and a roughly 140 cm semi-double filling the rest of the floor. Every chain on this list builds its cheapest double the same way. Photo: Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 2.0
Room charge, per person per nightTax
Under ¥5,000Nothing
¥5,000 to under ¥15,000¥200
¥15,000 to under ¥20,000¥400
¥20,000 and over¥500

Worked example: a ¥11,000 double for two adults is ¥5,500 each, so the tax is ¥200 per person — ¥400 on the room for the night, or ¥1,600 across four nights. Osaka's threshold is much lower than Tokyo's, so a cheap Osaka room still attracts tax where a cheap Tokyo one would not.

8The traps

  • Osaka's tax threshold is ¥5,000 per person, not ¥10,000. A ¥9,000 double for two pays ¥400 a night in tax — budget it.
  • The cheapest hotel is in the grittiest district. Nishinari is fine around the station and worth avoiding after dark in the Airin blocks. If that is not a trade you want, Tennoji costs ¥2,000 more.
  • Namba has three stations with the same name. Metro Namba, Nankai Namba and Osaka-Namba are different buildings; check which one your hotel's access page counts minutes from.
  • Chains undercut the OTAs. Toyoko Inn, APA and Super Hotel run their own rate calendars and member prices — compare before you commit.
  • USJ dates drive the whole city. When the park is busy, everything near it spikes; keep an APA or Comfort booking as your fallback because their rates stay flat.
