Osaka in five days: the pass decides the order

Five days in Osaka is not a sightseeing problem, it is an order-of-operations problem. The castle, the market, the tower and the observatory all sit on one ¥3,500 pass, and that pass has a 15:00 cliff in it. Universal Studios wants a whole day to itself. That leaves exactly one day for Nara, Kyoto or Kobe — and the airport train is the only thing you should book before you fly.

In one line Base in Namba. Buy the Osaka Amazing Pass for the castle-and-observatory day, and go up Umeda Sky Building before 15:00 or you lose the free entry. Give USJ its own day. Keep one day for a day trip: Kyoto is ¥580 and 29 minutes away, Kobe is ¥420 and 22.

1The pass decides the order

The Osaka Amazing Pass is the reason you cannot shuffle these days. A 1-day pass is ¥3,500 and it includes the things you were going to pay for anyway: Umeda Sky Building’s Kuchu Teien Observatory (normally ¥2,000), the Osaka Castle Museum (normally ¥1,200, and that includes the main tower and the Toyotomi Stone Wall Museum), Tsutenkaku’s observation deck, and the Tombori River Cruise (normally ¥2,000). That is over ¥5,000 of entries for ¥3,500, which is why one of your five days should be built around it.

Two rules that decide where that day goes. The pass’s “day” runs 03:00 to 02:59 the following morning, so a late dinner does not break it. And the 2-day pass (¥5,000) must be used on two consecutive days — not 48 hours, consecutive calendar days. The free Umeda Sky entry has its own catch, below.

2The five days

  1. Day 1

Land at Kansai, sleep in Namba, eat on Dotonbori

    Train + dinner
    Afternoon
Nankai Rapi:t from Kansai Airport to Namba: 34 minutes, the ordinary fare plus a ¥520 seat charge (¥730 for a super seat). Check in, walk the canal.
    Evening
Dotonbori is free to walk — the canal, the signs, the crowd. If you are starting the Amazing Pass tomorrow, hold the Tombori River Cruise for that day; it is included, and it is normally ¥2,000.
    Eat
Kamukura’s ‘oishii ramen’ is ¥760–890 depending on the shop. It is the cheapest proper bowl on the street.

TrapNamba is three stations. Nankai Namba is the airport line, Osaka Metro Namba is the Midosuji line, and Osaka-Namba is Kintetsu and Hanshin. Pick your hotel by which one you will actually use.

  2. Day 2

Castle, market, tower, observatory — the pass day

    ¥3,500 pass + ¥820 metro
    Morning
Osaka Castle main tower. ¥1,200 normally, free with the pass. Open 9:00–18:00, last entry 17:30. The park around it is free either way.
    Midday
Kuromon Ichiba Market for lunch — free to walk, snacks from a few hundred yen. Then Tsutenkaku’s observation deck in Shinsekai, also on the pass.
    Afternoon
Umeda Sky Building, Kuchu Teien Observatory: ¥2,000 normally, open 9:30–22:30 with last admission at 22:00. With the pass it is free from 9:30 to 15:00 and only 10% off after that.
    Evening
Tombori River Cruise on the pass, then okonomiyaki. Chibo’s Dotonbori-yaki starts at ¥1,480.

TrapThe 15:00 cliff. A sunset visit to Umeda Sky is the one part of this day the pass does not pay for — go up in the afternoon and eat dinner on the ground instead.

  3. Day 3

Universal Studios Japan, all of it

    from ¥8,400
    Full day
The 1-Day Studio Pass starts at ¥8,400 for adults (¥5,500 child, ¥7,600 senior) and the price depends on the date — USJ moved to date-banded pricing for admissions from 1 September 2026.
    Book
Buy online before you go and pick the date last. Arriving at opening is worth more than any tip in this guide.

TrapThe Express Pass is a separate, sometimes pricier ticket on top of the Studio Pass, and it is not sold at the gate on busy days. Check the date band first, then fix the rest of the trip around it.

  4. Day 4

One day trip: Nara, Kobe or Kyoto

    ¥840–1,360 return
    Kyoto
JR Special Rapid from Osaka Station: ¥580 and 29 minutes. Fushimi Inari is free and open around the clock, which is the cheapest full day out of Osaka.
    Kobe
JR to Sannomiya: ¥420 and 22 minutes. Chinatown, the bay, and beef at lunch prices.
    Nara
JR from Osaka Station: ¥840 and 50 minutes — a ‘Q’ rapid with a reserved seat adds ¥530. Kintetsu from Osaka-Namba is ¥680 ordinary fare, with a ¥520 limited-express charge if you take the express.
    Instead
If you would rather stay put, Day 4 becomes the aquarium: Kaiyukan with its dynamic pricing, and the Tempozan Ferris Wheel next door, which the Amazing Pass covers on a second pass day.

TrapNara and Kyoto are both day trips, which is why a five-day Osaka-only itinerary usually under-delivers. Choose one and commit; do not try to do both.

  5. Day 5

Market breakfast, one shrine, and out

    Breakfast + train
    Morning
Kuromon Ichiba for a standing breakfast, or Sumiyoshi Taisha and Namba Yasaka Shrine — no admission fee at either, and both are five minutes from a metro station.
    Midday
Last shopping in Shinsaibashi. Tax-free refunds move to the airport on 1 November 2026, so leave more time than you think you need at Kansai.

TrapThe Rapi:t is 34 minutes, but immigration, the tax-free queue and check-in are not. Three hours before an international departure, not two.

3What the five days cost

Transport, the pass and the two big tickets come to roughly ¥16,000–20,000 per person for the five days before food and hotel. Food is the variable: ¥760 ramen and ¥1,480 okonomiyaki at the bottom, twice that if you sit down twice a day.

Four of these have date-banded or dynamic pricing, which means buying on the day is the expensive way to do it.

5The traps

  • Umeda Sky’s 15:00 rule. The Amazing Pass entry is free only from 9:30 to 15:00, then 10% off. Sunset is the whole point of that building, and the pass does not cover it.
  • The 2-day pass needs consecutive days. Not 48 hours from first use. If you were planning castle on Tuesday and USJ on Thursday, buy two 1-day passes instead.
  • USJ prices move by date. ¥8,400 is the floor, not the price. Choose the date before you book flights.
  • Kaiyukan is dynamically priced and cheaper online than at the door — the calendar on the official page is the only honest price list.
  • Osaka Castle closes 28 December to 1 January, and the main tower stops admitting at 17:30.
  • The combos are gone. The Osaka Museum of History and the Suijo Bus combo tickets with the castle were both discontinued — no point asking.
  • The pass does not include transport. The Amazing Pass is entries; the Enjoy Eco Card is the metro and bus. Budget for both on the same day.
