Outlet malls from Tokyo 2026: which are worth the fare?

Twelve centres within about two hours of Tokyo sell a brand's finished season; the fare decides which is worth it. Two in-town options older lists print are gone, or never were outlets.

1What an outlet sells, in the operators' own words

Outlet covers at least three kinds of stock in Japan, and the operators say which you're buying. Bic Camera, which runs the outlet floors left in Machida, Yokohama, Namba and Akihabara station-front, calls its line seisan kanryōhin (out of production), sotobako furyōhin (damaged carton) or rifā bisshu hin (refurbished), against chūkohin, second-hand, a different label on a different shelf. The fashion centres work the other way: Mitsui and Premium Outlets take the season a brand has finished with, staffed by the brand.

The phrase shoppers use most, "this was made for the outlet", isn't on either operator's site. Neither Mitsui nor Premium Outlets claims its stock can be outlet-exclusive lines; the one chain that defines outlet stock gives the out-of-production definition above. So treat a 40% off ticket as a real 40% off a tag set somewhere else, and the story behind it as something a seller can say.

The fare is why. A return bus to Kisarazu is ¥3,000, Shisui ¥2,600, Gotemba up to ¥4,400 on a weekend. Spending that on a coat you didn't plan to buy is a loss, whatever the ticket says. The centres below are worth a day when you know what you're going for.

2The twelve, and what it costs to reach them

Twelve centres sit within roughly two hours of Tokyo: four run by Mitsui, four by the Premium Outlets group, three by AEON and one by Seibu Prince. Where a row says train fare, the operator gives the route and the time, not the price: JR doesn't print fares on these pages.

In one line Makuhari is the cheap trip, Kisarazu the big one, Shisui the airport stop, and Gotemba the only one that has to be booked. Makuhari is 30 minutes from Tokyo Station; a return trip to Kisarazu costs ¥3,000 before you buy anything.

Mitsui Outlet Park Kisarazu reached 330 shops at its fourth building phase, the country's largest store count in the operator's January 2025 release. The trip is a straight highway bus from Bus Terminal Tokyo Yaesu, underground B: ¥1,500 one way, about 50 minutes; from Busta Shinjuku, 62 minutes, ¥1,600. This is the one line you can't reserve, in the operator's own words: 「この路線は予約できません。先着順にご乗車ください。」

Fares and the bus-and-coupon set ticket went up on 1 July 2026, and the local bus to Sodegaura and Kisarazu stations was retimed on 1 October 2026, so re-check any timetable screenshot from last year. Shops 10:00–20:00, gate 09:30, restaurants to 21:00, two closing days — 16 and 17 February 2027.

4Shisui, the one that fits an airport day

Shisui Premium Outlets: 220 shops, 20 minutes from Narita Airport, the only centre here that works as an airport stop. The airport bus leaves Terminal 2 from stop 3 and Terminal 1 from stop 30, ¥500 one way, about 20 minutes, paid as you board, no seat reservation, cards taken. From the city: Bus Terminal Tokyo Yaesu, underground A, stop A02, ¥1,300, around 50 minutes, paid as you get off. By train to JR or Keisei Shisui Station, the local bus is ¥310 for 15 minutes.

In February everything closes an hour earlier, at 19:00, and the centre takes one closing day a year — the next is 25 February 2027. Otherwise it runs 10:00–20:00, enough for a Narita run if your flight leaves in the evening.

5Gotemba, the one you book

Gotemba Premium Outlets: 290 shops, and a bus you book like a train seat. The JR Bus Kanto service, sold as the Gotemba Premium Outlets go, runs from Tokyo Station Yaesu South, Busta Shinjuku and Ueno, every seat allocated: 「座席指定制ですので、あらかじめ乗車券をお買い求めください」. From Tokyo Station, ¥1,900–2,000 on a weekday and ¥2,100–2,200 at weekends and holidays; on the bus, a flat ¥2,500. The operator's timetable: Busta Shinjuku 08:15 to 09:50, a 95-minute run, Tokyo Station 08:30.

The bus from Mishima Station had a fare revision on 1 October, to ¥1,000 for an adult, and the free shuttle to JR Gotemba Station runs about every 15 minutes and takes 15 minutes, so a train-only plan needs no booking. Hours 10:00–20:00 March to November, 10:00–19:00 December to February, one closing day a year.

6Karuizawa, the train one

Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza is the only centre here you reach by shinkansen: about 70 minutes from Tokyo Station to Karuizawa, then a three-minute walk from the south exit. The trains that stop, the Asama and some Hakutaka services, carry non-reserved cars; the all-reserved Kagayaki doesn't stop at Karuizawa at all.

The operator gives the count as about 200 rather than a precise figure: an outdoor plaza between the station and the mountains. Hours 10:00–19:00, to 20:00 on set days; the operator publishes a seasonal calendar, not a fixed closing day. The station-side entrance makes a rainy day better than at the outdoor centres you reach by bus.

7The Makuhari pair, where the trip is 30 minutes

Mitsui Outlet Park Makuhari: about 140 shops, one minute from the south exit of JR Kaihin-Makuhari on the Keiyo Line, restaurants open to 21:30, past the shops' closing time. AEON MALL Makuhari New City: about 360 shops, its own station JR Makuhari-Toyosuna, the mall directly in front. The mall: 10:00–21:00 daily, restaurant floor to 22:00, free bus from Kaihin-Makuhari after 17:00 on weekdays.

The pair makes an obvious half-day: shop the outlet, walk one stop, eat in the mall. It's also the cheapest way to compare the two models of stock: the outlet's tickets and the mall's full-price tags sit 30 minutes apart on the same afternoon.

8The bay and the suburbs

Mitsui Outlet Park Yokohama Bayside, about 170 shops on the Kanazawa-ku waterfront: five minutes on foot from Torihama on the Seaside Line, or a direct Sotetsu bus from the second bus terminal at Yokohama Station's west exit. That bus runs 40 minutes, ¥650, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays only, no reservation. THE OUTLETS Shonan Hiratsuka, about 150 shops and the newest of the twelve, is a Kanachu bus from JR Hiratsuka's north exit or Odakyu Hon-Atsugi's south exit; the Twin City Okami stop is at the door, Okami an eight-minute walk.

Mitsui Outlet Park Iruma is the family one: about 210 shops, heavy on home and everyday brands. The Seibu Ikebukuro Line express takes 40 minutes to Iruma-shi, and the Seibu bus from stop 2 costs ¥220 for the 15-minute run. Shops close 20:00; two days off in February.

9The three with no queue

Sano Premium Outlets is 180 shops in Tochigi. A Marronnier bus from Busta Shinjuku and Tokyo Station costs ¥1,600 and takes about 90 minutes to the Sano Shintoshi terminal, three minutes from the shops. All seats reserved, so buy ahead. By train: shinkansen to Oyama, the Ryomo Line to Sano Station, then a 20-minute local bus. Hours 10:00–20:00 most of the year, 19:00 in February, one closing day a year.

Fukaya-Hanazono Premium Outlets, 130 shops in Saitama, is the newest Premium Outlets centre. Tokyo to Kumagaya is 75 minutes on the Ueno-Tokyo Line, the Chichibu Railway adds 20 minutes to Fukaya-Hanazono Station, then a three-minute walk. The other way in: the Hanazono Kanko bus from Shinrin-koen Station on the Tobu Tojo Line, 45 minutes, ¥480 on an IC card or ¥550 in cash.

AEON LakeTown OUTLET is where the locals shop. The operator counts 700 shops across three buildings and doesn't publish a figure for the outlet wing alone: it's part of a mall, not a destination of its own. It's 56 minutes from Tokyo on the JR Musashino Line to Koshigaya-LakeTown, and a free shuttle links the station and the mori building, or a ¥100 bus.

10The two in-town options, and what happened to them

Lists of Tokyo outlets keep naming two city-centre places, and both have moved on. The first is the Bic Camera outlet floor at Ikebukuro East Exit, run with Sofmap. Its relocation notice: closed 28 July 2024, reopened 8 August 2024 as 「買取・リユースの専門店」, a buy-back and reuse shop with second-hand Macs and phones on the first floor and used gaming PCs and console games on the second. It opens 10:00–21:00 and is two minutes from Ikebukuro Station's east exit. The group's remaining outlet floors are in Machida, Yokohama Vivre, Namba and the Akihabara station-front building.

The second is Takeya in Ueno, which isn't an outlet. The operator's English page calls it a large discount store, and the fashion building, TAKEYA3, imports direct from Europe every season, selling current-season stock: a monthly brand sale at 10% off or ten times the points, an import outerwear fair. The October 2026 edition advertises new autumn and winter stock already marked down, the opposite of last season's leftovers. Both are worth an hour; neither replaces a day at Makuhari.

11Before you pay

The tax-free counter is in the centre, not at the airport, and the rules change on 1 November 2026: the refund replaces the till discount and is claimed at the airport on the way out. Bic Camera's group page gives the general-goods threshold as a tax-excluded ¥5,000, which most shops work to. Receipts travel with the goods, so a bag sent home by courier needs its paperwork sorted first.

The last bus back is the constraint on the day trips. The Gotemba and Sano services are reserved, and weekend evening returns fill first; Kisarazu and Shisui are first come, so the risk is a full bus, not a missing seat. Buying more than you can carry is the other problem, and a same-day courier to a hotel or an airport is normal in Japan.

12Questions and answers

What the outlet trip costs, which seats have to be booked, and where the two city-centre options went.

Which outlet is closest to Tokyo?

Mitsui Outlet Park Makuhari, one minute from the south exit of JR Kaihin-Makuhari, 30 minutes from Tokyo Station on the Keiyo Line. The same line reaches AEON MALL Makuhari New City in the same 30 minutes, the mall in front of its own station, Makuhari-Toyosuna.

Do I have to book the bus?

Two of the direct services need a seat booked ahead: Gotemba and Sano, both JR Bus Kanto, all seats reserved and sold in advance. Kisarazu, Shisui and the Yokohama Bayside bus are first come, where the risk is a full bus, not a lost seat.

Can I shop on the way to or from Narita Airport?

Yes, at Shisui Premium Outlets: 20 minutes and ¥500 from Terminal 2's bus stop 3, paid as you board, cards accepted. The same stop serves the return leg, so a late-afternoon flight and a morning at the outlets fit one day.

When do the outlets close?

Most run 10:00–20:00. The Premium Outlets group drops to 19:00 from December to February, Karuizawa runs 19:00 with 20:00 on set days, and each centre takes one closing day a year — the group's next is 25 February 2027.

Is an outlet cheaper than the shops in town?

The discount is real, but it applies to a tag set for a full-price sale that no longer exists. The stock is out-of-production, end-of-season or, at the electronics floors, refurbished or box-damaged. Add the fare and a return trip to Kisarazu costs ¥3,000.

Is Takeya or the Ikebukuro Bic Camera floor an outlet?

No to both. Takeya is a discount store whose fashion building sells current-season imported stock; the Bic Camera floor at Ikebukuro East Exit closed 28 July 2024 and reopened 8 August 2024 as a buy-back and reuse shop.
