Kansai winter illuminations 2026-27: which ones are free?

Kansai's winter lights run mid-September to the end of February, and its biggest displays are free street light: four kilometres of Osaka's Midosuji, three and a half of Wakayama's zelkova boulevard, 2.5 km of Himeji, station to castle gates. Twenty-two of the twenty-four events below have 2026-27 dates; Nara's Rurie, a seventeen-year February fixture, is still unannounced, and the Kyoto Station staircase runs all year. Two Kyoto fixtures are out: Rurikei shut for a rebuild on 13 October, Rohm with its 2022 edition.

In one line Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe put their light on the street and charge nothing: Midosuji and Nakanoshima from 3 November, Umeda's squares from the 4th, Himeji's 2.5 km from 20 November. The paid ones are gated gardens — Osaka Castle ¥2,000, Kobe's Illuminage ¥2,000, Shiga's HIKARIUM ¥2,100 — running to mid-February.

Dates come from each event's operator, not a listing site. Unpublished nightly times are marked in the table; Kobe's Luminarie and Nara's Rurie publish later in the autumn.

Christmas isn't the deadline. The markets and Umeda's two shows end on 25 December; the longest runs go to mid-February: Osaka Castle, Kobe's Illuminage, Shiga's HIKARIUM, Wakayama's Festa Luce, the Umekita gold avenue.

The free displays are the big ones. Midosuji is 4 km of trees, Himeji 2.5 km from station to castle, Wakayama's Keyaki parade about 1.5 million bulbs over 3.5 km — none of it gated. The paid ones are gardens: Osaka Castle's Nishinomaru, Kobe's fruit farm, Shiga's English garden.

Early November is thin. Midosuji and Nakanoshima start on 3 November, Umeda on the 4th, but Himeji and the Tennoji market wait until the 20th and Miyama until the end of January. The paid gardens open in October and stay open.

Midosuji. Lit 3 November to 31 December, 17:00 to 1am, free, and needing no planning: the airport train, subway and most city hotels sit on it. Four kilometres from the Hanshin-mae crossing in Umeda to the Namba-nishiguchi crossing, ginkgo trees in colour the whole way. With the Expo opening, last winter it was lit from April; 2026 puts it back on a November start.

Nakanoshima. OSAKA Hikari Renaissance runs 11 to 25 December on the island between the rivers: projection work on the city hall and the Central Public Hall, a market on the promenade, the 150-metre tunnel of trees at the entry. The island's own lighting — trees along the water, the public hall's west face — runs far longer: 3 November to 31 December. Free, 10 minutes from Yodoyabashi Station; programme detail comes in late October.

Osaka Castle. The Nishinomaru Garden holds Illuminage 20 November to 14 February, lighting 17:00 to 21:30, garden open to 22:00; ¥2,000 adults, ¥1,000 children from one year old, ¥500 more for priority entry. Theme: the castle's Sengoku story, armour, banners, a lantern corridor, plus a new light swing. Gate: the Otemon, 15 minutes across the park from JR Osakajokoen, 10 from Tanimachi 4-chome.

3Umeda and Tennoji: the squares, the avenue and the market

Umeda Sky Building. The Christmas programme runs 13 November to 25 December; the free part is on the ground. Wonder Square, at the foot of the towers, holds a 25-metre tree of about 130,000 LEDs with a light-and-music show from 1 to 25 December, 17:00 to 21:30. This year's story: a black cat called Noel, plus a small market on the square. The 40th-floor observatory has its own lighting and needs a ticket.

Grand Front Osaka and Umekita. GRAND WISH CHRISTMAS runs 4 November to 25 December across the station's north side: a tree in the Knowledge Plaza with a light curtain, a show every 15 minutes, 16:00 to midnight on weekdays, 15:00 at weekends. The Umekita avenue is bigger: 156 street trees, roughly 510,000 champagne-gold LEDs, lit 17:00 to midnight from 4 November to 28 February.

The Tennoji market. Christmas Market in Osaka てんしば opens 20 November, closes on Christmas Day: 24 stalls this year, three new, with mulled wine, sausages and German food. Park entry is free; you pay for what you eat. Hours: 16:00 to 21:00 on opening night, 11:00 to 21:00 daily until 18 December, then 11:00 to 21:30 from the 19th, last orders half an hour before closing. Directly above Tennoji Station.

4The parks and the studio

Hirakata Park runs its light garden from 31 October to 4 April, on weekends and holidays plus published dates — 21 to 25 December, 28 to 30 December, 4 and 5 January, the spring holidays. Lighting starts at 17:00 in winter, later as the days lengthen. The lights are included in admission; the night free pass, in from 16:00, is ¥3,900 adults, ¥3,300 primary-school children, ¥2,500 ages two to six. 30 minutes from central Osaka, three minutes from Hirakatakoen Station.

Harvest Hill, in the hills above Sakai, is southern Osaka's biggest display and the fussiest calendar: 30 October to 14 February, specific days only, 17:30 to 21:00, last entry 20:30. Evening-only ticket ¥1,500 adults, ¥1,800 on December Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and on 23 and 24 December, ¥800 children from four; e-tickets went on sale 17 October. The regular bus back to Izumigaoka leaves before the lighting ends; check the direct-bus nights.

Universal Studios Japan runs its holiday season from 13 November to 17 January, in the park's 25th year. The Hogwarts castle projection show is back, with the tree and the parade; restaurant and show times come out about a month ahead. The kids-free pass, one child free with each adult, is ¥8,400 the pair against ¥13,900 normally, valid 13 November to 30 December and on sale since 14 September.

5Kyoto: the station, the gorge and the mountain villages

Kyoto Station. The 171-step grand staircase inside the station carries a graphic illumination all year, free, 15:00 to 22:00 in winter. The programme changes monthly — Kyoto's festivals, halloween, the autumn leaves, the New Year — with a winter programme listed from 26 to 31 December. The city's only free light show that can't be rained off, two minutes from the Shinkansen gates.

The Sagano train. The light fantasy on the Sagano Romantic Train runs 24 October to 29 December, no service on 16 December. The gorge between Torokko Saga and Torokko Kameoka is lit from 16:30, so only the late trains see it — the operator points at the 16:30 departure from Torokko Kameoka, looking back up the valley — and names the extra services — trains 81 and 82 from 24 October to 13 December and on 26 and 27 December, trains 91 and 92 from 14 to 30 November and on 5 and 6 December. One way ¥880 adults, ¥440 children, no lights surcharge; seats on sale a month ahead at midnight. Carriages are replaced after 29 December.

Nijo Castle. NAKED meets Nijo Castle runs early: 23 October to 5 December, 18:00 to 22:00 with last entry 21:00. Projection work goes onto the Karamon gate, the inner walls and the garden; the route takes an hour. Tickets ¥2,000 midweek, ¥2,400 Friday to Sunday, early rate ¥1,600 and ¥2,000 until 22 October; middle-school age and under free, Kyoto residents and students ¥500 back at the gate.

Miyama. Kyoto's northern thatched village has run a lantern festival in the snow for two decades; after two winters with too little snow it now goes by the Winter Lantern Corridor. Eight nights, 30 January to 6 February 2027, 17:00 to 19:00: around 80 lanterns in the lanes between the houses, LED lanterns through the village, mochi-pounding each evening. Reaching it: 80 minutes by car from Kyoto, or a train to Sonobe or Hiyoshi and a bus. No entry price is published, because there's no gate.

Kobe Luminarie doesn't happen in December: the 32nd edition runs 29 January to 7 February 2027, through the old foreign settlement, the East Park and Meriken Park. The organisers hadn't published the nightly hours when this page was updated; the route gets packed at weekends. Sannomiya through to Motomachi is free; Meriken Park is the ticketed part, ¥500 weekdays and ¥750 at weekends in advance, ¥1,000 and ¥1,500 on the day, groups ¥400 and ¥600. In November or early December, it isn't on.

Kobe Illuminage: opened 23 October, runs to 14 February, in the flower park in the northern hills. Gate 17:00, lights 17:30 to 21:30, last entry 21:15. The 17th edition, themed around a garden of light, has tiered pricing: ¥2,000 adults, ¥1,000 children, ¥500 a dog, another ¥1,000 for priority entry, advance rate ¥1,800 and ¥900 ending 22 October. Reach it by taxi from Okaba or Sanda, or a 35-minute bus from Sannomiya.

The Herb Garden market, 400 metres up a mountain, is Kobe's Christmas market: 7 November to 28 December; stalls 10:30 to 16:30, open to 20:00 on nights the garden runs late — weekends and holidays to 6 December, then daily 11 to 28 December. The ticket covers the ropeway and the garden, ¥3,300 adults, and on ordinary days the last car up leaves at 16:45 — so for the lights, go on a night-opening day. Five minutes from Shin-Kobe, one stop from Sannomiya on the Shinkansen line.

Mount Rokko has the quietest display in the region, and the earliest: the light forest runs weekends and holidays until 29 November in the mountain's two venues, 17:00 to 20:00, pass sales ending 19:00. The same passport covers the Kobe Mt Rokko Meets Art programme. It overlaps the autumn leaves, so go early.

Himeji. The city and the prefecture's tourism body extended the lighting off the avenue into the castle grounds. The lit route runs about 2.5 km from Himeji Station to the castle, 510,000 LEDs against 250,000 last winter, 20 November to 11 January, 17:00 to 22:00, free. A Christmas market in front of the station runs 18 to 25 December (closed on the 21st), and Otemae-dori closes to traffic on 19 and 20 December, so you walk down the middle with the castle at the end. 60 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen, 90 by special rapid.

7Shiga, Wakayama and Nara

HIKARIUM at ROSA & BERRY Tawada, outside Maibara: about 1.2 million LEDs over 60,000 square metres, 9 October to 14 February, on a tricky calendar — Friday to Sunday and holidays in October and November, daily except Tuesday in December (closed 31 December), weekends and holidays in January and February. Lighting 17:30 to 20:30 most nights, 16:30 in December; 24 and 25 December midday to 21:30 and ¥400 more. Adults ¥2,100, children from four to primary school ¥1,000, under-threes free; the Milky Way night train is a separate ¥1,000. The last bus to Maibara leaves early evening, on a published monthly time — check it or budget for a taxi.

Festa Luce takes over Porto Europa, the European-styled park inside Wakayama Marina City, from 31 October to 14 February, 17:00 to 21:00 with last entry 20:30. Ninth year, built around the harbour frontage: an illuminated market, rides after dark, a tree dominating the entrance square. Tickets ¥1,800 at the gate, ¥1,600 in advance for adults, ¥1,000 primary-school children. About 30 minutes by bus from Wakayama Station.

The Keyaki Light Parade in central Wakayama: over 1.5 million LEDs across roughly 500 zelkova trees, running 3.5 km from JR Wakayama Station past the castle to Nankai Wakayamashi and on to the prefectural office, 21 November to 28 February. Japan's biggest single lit street, with no gate and no closing time.

Nara's Rurie is the one event that hasn't published: blue light connecting Kasuga Taisha, Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji across the park. It has run in February's second week for seventeen years, and the 18th edition's dates weren't on the operator's site as of 17 October. The 2026 edition ran 8 to 14 February, 18:00 to 21:00, with parts of the route ticketed. Build an early-February trip around it once the dates appear.

The Rurikei illumination has closed. Kyoto Illumiere at the Rurikei onsen, in the hills south of Sonobe, was the region's biggest light installation — an all-year walk-through garden. The operator closed it for a rebuild on 13 October 2026 and hasn't given a reopening date, so any guide recommending it this winter is out of date.

The Rohm display in Kyoto is over. The company lit its headquarters grounds at Mibu for a couple of decades; the last edition was 2022 and the operator's page is an archive.

Not published as of 17 October 2026. Osaka Station City's fifth-floor square usually runs a Twilight Fantasy through December, and this winter's programme wasn't on the operator's events page; Abeno Harukas, Namba Parks and the Expo '70 Commemorative Park have announced nothing either. Most operators publish detail in late October; look again in November.

9What I'd do

One free evening in Osaka. Yodoyabashi Station at 17:00, out onto the Nakanoshima promenade while the trees are lit, east to the city hall for the projection, then south down Midosuji to Shinsaibashi. A two-hour walk, four kilometres of lights, nothing to pay. Add the Tennoji market between 20 November and 25 December, one stop further on the same line.

One paid evening, and only one. Osaka Castle for the Japanese imagery and the cheaper ticket, Kobe's Illuminage if you have a car, HIKARIUM if Maibara is on your line to Kyoto. All three run to mid-February.

One evening for Kyoto before December. Nijo Castle's projection work ends on 5 December and the Sagano train's lights stop on 29 December. In the second half of December, take the station staircase and a day on the Arashiyama line instead. In January, Miyama's lanterns at the end of the month are worth the long trip out.

Before you go. Kansai's December evenings are 5°C to 10°C and the gardens colder, so the paid displays need a real coat; HIKARIUM and Harvest Hill are hillside sites with nowhere to shelter. Sunset is just before 17:00 in mid-December, so a 17:15 arrival gets the lights against a blue sky, not black. The last trains are the constraint: Osaka Metro runs to around midnight, so a 21:30 lights-out at Osaka Castle still leaves an hour, but Harvest Hill and HIKARIUM depend on a bus that stops before the lights do.

10Questions and answers

Which nights are free, which need a ticket, and what's still lit in February.

Is any of it free?

Most of it. Midosuji, the Nakanoshima street lighting, the city hall projection, Umeda's squares, Tennoji's market, Himeji's 2.5 km and Wakayama's Keyaki boulevard cost nothing, and the Kyoto station staircase is free all year. You pay for a gated garden or park: Osaka Castle's Nishinomaru ¥2,000, Kobe's Illuminage ¥2,000, Shiga's HIKARIUM ¥2,100, Festa Luce ¥1,800, Nijo Castle ¥2,000 to ¥2,400, the Herb Garden ropeway ¥3,300, and the rides at Hirakata and Universal Studios.

When do the lights come on and go off?

City displays light at 17:00 and the streets run late, to 22:00 or 1am on Midosuji. The gardens open their lighting at 17:30: Osaka Castle and Kobe's Illuminage switch off at 21:30, HIKARIUM 20:30, Harvest Hill 21:00, Nijo 22:00. Sunset in mid-December is just before 17:00, so a 17:15 arrival gets colour against a dark blue sky rather than black. Weekday evenings in December are quieter everywhere.

If I have one night in Osaka, which one?

Midosuji, and add Nakanoshima if you're walking anyway. Free, no booking, on the line your hotel is probably on, 3 November to 31 December. Metro to Yodoyabashi at 17:00, walk the island, then south down the avenue to Shinsaibashi. To pay for one: Osaka Castle's Illuminage is the city's better-value paid display, and the priority ticket is worth ¥500 on a weekend.

Can I do Osaka and Kyoto in one evening?

You can — 29 minutes between the two stations on the JR special rapid — but that splits one evening across two cities for one display each. Nijo's projection ends at 22:00 and Midosuji runs past midnight, so a late start in Osaka and an early one in Kyoto is the wrong order. Give each city its own evening; use the Midosuji line within Osaka.

What needs booking in advance?

Universal Studios Japan, priced by date and sold out on December weekends; Kobe's Illuminage for the advance rate, which stops on 22 October; NAKED at Nijo castle for the early-bird rate, which stops the day before it opens; Kobe Luminarie's Meriken Park section, cheaper in advance; the Sagano train, seats on sale a month ahead at midnight and sold out for the 16:30 departures. Everything else here you can walk into.

What's still lit after Christmas?

More than you might expect, and this is where Kansai differs from Tokyo. Osaka Castle, Kobe's Illuminage, Shiga's HIKARIUM and Festa Luce run to 14 February; the Umekita gold avenue and Wakayama's Keyaki boulevard to 28 February; Himeji to 11 January; Kobe Luminarie from 29 January to 7 February; Miyama's lanterns from 30 January; Nara's Rurie in early February once the dates are published. What ends in December: every Christmas market, the Umeda shows, Nijo's projection on 5 December.

I'm in Kansai in the first week of November. What's on?

Midosuji and Nakanoshima from 3 November, Umeda's squares and the Umekita avenue from the 4th, the paid gardens open since October. Nothing else has started: Himeji and the Tennoji market wait until 20 November, the Kyoto station programme until 26 December, Miyama until the end of January. Early November is the moment for the October openings — Hirakata Park, Harvest Hill, Kobe's Illuminage, Nijo castle and HIKARIUM are all running.

Still unsure? Pick one paid garden and one free street, and give each its own evening. The mistake people make in Kansai is trying to see Osaka Castle, Kobe and Himeji on the same Saturday — two of those are 60 to 90 minutes apart by train, and the lights are the same lights.
