Mount Fuji in one day from Tokyo: the pagoda, the lake and the ropeway

Two stations on the same line hold this day together, and the express from Shinjuku calls at both. Shimoyoshida is the pagoda: 398 steps above the street, twenty-five minutes on foot from the platform, and free. Kawaguchiko, fifteen minutes and ¥310 further on, is the lake, the loop bus and the ropeway. The mountain shows itself best before eleven, so the morning goes to the pagoda and the afternoon to the water.

In one line Fuji Excursion at 07:30 from Shinjuku, off at Shimoyoshida at 09:13 (¥4,010). Half an hour up to the deck and back down, twenty minutes along Honcho street, then ¥310 and fifteen minutes to Kawaguchiko for houtou lunch opposite the station. A ¥1,500 bus day pass covers the ropeway stop and Oishi Park, and the ropeway itself is ¥1,000 return until 31 October 2026 and ¥1,200 after that. The last express home leaves Kawaguchiko at 17:41, or Shimoyoshida at 17:54.

1What fixes the order

Shimoyoshida is the pagoda, and Kawaguchiko is the lake: two stations on the Fujikyu line, ¥310 and fifteen minutes apart, and the direct train from Tokyo stops at both. That single fact is what makes a Fuji day trip work without a car, and it also fixes the order, because the express runs four times a day and the last one leaves at 17:41.

Route from ShinjukuTimeOne waySeats
Fuji Excursion to Shimoyoshida (the pagoda)1 h 43 (07:30 → 09:13)¥4,010 (¥2,390 fare + ¥1,620 limited express)Reserved only, four round trips a day

Highway coach to Chuo-do Shimoyoshida, then five minutes on footabout 1 h 50¥2,200 at the counter, ¥2,000 booked onlineReserved only, one month ahead

The pagoda's station is ¥190 cheaper on the express, and fifteen minutes earlier, which matters when the deck has a queue. If you'd rather skip the pagoda entirely and go straight to the water, the through fare is the ¥4,200 one and the fare inside the line is the same ¥1,170 from Otsuki that the transport guide works through.

The other thing the timetable fixes is the light. The mountain is clearest in the morning, before the cloud builds over the summit, and the coaches that do the rounds of the lake arrive at the pagoda car parks an hour after the first train. So the morning is the postcard and the afternoon is the shore — which is also the order the loop bus and the ropeway want, since both close well before the last train.

A JR TOKYO Wide Pass takes the reservation question away for ¥16,000 over three consecutive days, covering the express seat and every train on the Fujikyu line. On a return to Kawaguchiko alone it's ¥7,600 worse than buying tickets, so it needs a second day out on JR East — Nikko, Izu, Karuizawa — before the arithmetic turns. The Kawaguchiko transport guide works that comparison through route by route.

2The day, station by station

  1. Morning

Shimoyoshida: 398 steps to the deck

    Free
    09:13
Off the express at Shimoyoshida, two stops before the lake. The street to Sengen Park starts at the station: ten minutes to the foot of the stairs, then 398 of them. The city's own figure is twenty-five minutes on foot from the platform to the tower, so give the climb half an hour with stops.
    The deck
Rebuilt in 2022, free, open around the clock, with toilets at the top and the whole of Fujiyoshida laid out below — the town by then is the subject as much as the mountain is.
    Crowds
Cherry blossom and autumn are the two weeks when the deck queues, and a 09:30 arrival is ahead of them. Tour coaches drop at the station rather than the park, because the street is too narrow for a bus, so the climb buys you a head start as well as a view.
    Below
Shimoyoshida's shrine sits at the bottom of the stairs, free to walk through, and the park's lower paths are a quiet way back down if the steps are busy in both directions.

WatchFrom 17:00 to 21:50 in October and November the park is lit, which is the best view of the day and also one you can't catch on a day trip: the last express leaves Kawaguchiko at 17:41, and the light-up belongs to a night at the lake.

  2. Late morning

Honcho street: the mountain at the end of the road

    Free
    Walk
Twenty minutes down from the deck and five minutes from Shimoyoshida Station, which is the same street seen from either end. The Fujikyu line rates it from the platform, and the city rates the walk down from the pagoda.
    Shoot
One straight street of 昭和 shopfronts, lanterns and overhead wires, with the mountain closing the far end of it. Twenty minutes is enough for the photograph and a walk past the shutters.
    Two stops
A tourist information office opened on the street in March 2024, and the web of lanes west of it — the old drinking quarter — holds about a hundred yakitori counters, izakayas and bars. They open in the evening, so a day trip sees it quiet.

WatchThe city asks you not to step into the roadway for the photograph: it blocks traffic, and the crossing guards at the Honcho intersection will move you on. Shoot from the pavement, and remember the street is still residential.

  3. Midday

Kawaguchiko: houtou across the road from the station

    ¥310 fare, lunch extra
    Across
Any train on the line takes you from Shimoyoshida to Kawaguchiko for ¥310, fifteen minutes on the express. The station is the hub for the lake buses, and everything in the afternoon starts outside it.
    Eat
Houtou Fudou, directly opposite the station and open 11:00 to 19:00: one cast-iron pot a person, flat noodles with pumpkin, mushrooms and miso, cooked to order and served boiling. No bookings, and the queue starts at opening.
    Instead
If the queue is out of the door, eat later at the lake: Oishi Park's building has a kitchen on the second floor (9:00 to 17:00) and a café with the mountain in the window (9:15 to 16:45), and the Hanaterasu does dessert and coffee.

WatchA pot is a full meal and there's no way to book one. Go at 11:00, or eat after 13:30, or you'll spend the best light of the afternoon standing in the street.

  4. Afternoon

The north shore: Oishi Park and the Hanaterasu

    ¥1,500 bus pass
    The bus
The red line leaves Kawaguchiko Station every fifteen minutes: eleven minutes to the ropeway stop, twenty-seven to the Nature Living Centre at Oishi Park, which is the far end of the lake and the view the postcards come from.
    The pass
¥1,500 for one day and ¥2,000 for two, half price for children, sold at the station window and on the bus itself (one-day tickets only). A single ride starts at ¥180, so the pass turns on the third one.
    Oishi Park
Free to walk, free to park, and open all day. The building has a shop until 17:45 in the March to October season, a café with the mountain in the window until 16:45, and the kochia on the bank turns red through October — this year about ten days early.
    The Hanaterasu
Ten minutes along the shore path: nine small white cabins, free entry, free parking, and HanaCafe Kikyou in the H building (9:30 to 17:00, no closing day) does the local grape and soft-cream sweets under a ceiling of dried flowers.

WatchThe buses keep running after the trains stop. The last bus reaches Oishi at 18:12 and the last one back leaves at 18:27, an hour after the last express — so a late afternoon on the lake is a slow ride home on the local line from Otsuki, not a missed train.

  5. Late afternoon

The ropeway, then the last express

    ¥1,000 return
    The ride
From the ropeway's own bus stop on the south shore the gondola climbs from 856 m to 1,075 m in three minutes, with the lake below and the mountain across it. Walk down if the queue is long and the weather is fine.
    Price
¥1,000 return and ¥500 for children until 31 October 2026, then ¥1,200 and ¥600 from 1 November. Single fares are ¥600 and ¥300. The operator sells a time-reserved boarding ticket online, which is the one queue worth skipping.
    Hours
8:30 to 17:00 with the last car down at 17:20, extended to 18:00 from 20 July to 31 August, and the last car up at 16:20 from 1 December to 28 February. The swing and the lookout tower beside the summit close at 16:00.
    Home
The 17:41 express stops at Shimoyoshida at 17:54 on its way back to Shinjuku, so the last hour can be spent on Honcho street and the day still ends on the same train as everyone else's.

WatchWind stops the gondola: the operator keeps a live camera and the day's operating notice at the top of its site, and the line takes two inspection mornings (21–22 October and 25–26 November 2026) that close it at 15:00. It doesn't run at all between 7 and 18 December.

3What the day costs, and what to book ahead

The two tickets that decide this day are both reserved-seat, and one of them sells out a month before the best weekends of the year.

The day's own transport comes to ¥10,830 a person: ¥8,020 for the express both ways, ¥310 for the hop between the two stations, ¥1,500 for the bus pass and ¥1,000 for the ropeway. Drop the ropeway and it's ¥9,830. Take the unreserved route — a Chuo Line train to Otsuki and the Fujikyu local from there — and the rail share halves to ¥2,390 each way, at the cost of an hour and the certainty of a seat. Trip.com doesn't sell the Fuji Excursion, so that row carries two pills rather than three.

4What closes early, and the last rides

  • The last express is at 17:41. Four trains a day, all reserved, and after the 17:41 from Kawaguchiko — 17:54 from Shimoyoshida — there's nothing direct back to Tokyo until morning.
  • The ropeway's last car up is 17:00. It's 16:20 from 1 December to 28 February, and the swing and the lookout close an hour before the gondola does, at 16:00, and don't open at all in wind or rain.
  • Two inspection mornings and one long closure. The ropeway shuts at 15:00 on 21–22 October and 25–26 November 2026, and doesn't run between 7 and 18 December 2026.
  • The ropeway fare changes on 1 November 2026. ¥1,000 becomes ¥1,200 return and ¥500 becomes ¥600 for children — the operator announced it on its own site, and any guide written in 2024 still quotes the old price.
  • The lake shuts down before the buses do. Oishi Park's café closes at 16:45 (16:30 from November) and the shop at 17:45; the Hanaterasu shops close at 17:00. The buses themselves run to 18:27 back from Oishi.
  • The pagoda's car parks are ¥1,000 to ¥1,500 for six hours. Four city car parks, and no bus or microbus can enter the street at all — groups are dropped at Shimoyoshida Station and walk up.
  • Honcho street is a road, not a set. The city's line is that stepping into the carriageway to take the picture is illegal; the guards at the intersection enforce it.

5If you stay the night

One night at the lake changes what the day can be, because the first express out of Shinjuku is the 07:30 and the last one back is the 17:41. Everything outside those ten hours needs a bed within walking distance of the water.

  • The sunrise and the light-up. The mountain at first light, the reflection on a still lake, and Sengen Park lit from 17:00 to 21:50 through October and November — none of it fits between two trains.
  • The day's last useful train is the 10:30. Four expresses leave Shinjuku at 07:30, 08:30, 09:30 and 10:30, with a fifth at 11:34 on weekdays from 1 October to 30 November 2026. A day trip can't start late; a night at the lake can.
  • Two days makes the passes work. The bus coupon drops to ¥2,000 for two days, and the Mount Fuji Pass — ¥7,500 for one day, ¥10,200 for two, foreign passports only, sold over the counter — folds the Fujikyu line, the area buses, the ropeway and the lake cruises into one card.
  • The other lakes are a bus ride further. The green line runs from Kawaguchiko Station to Saiko and the Iyashi-no-Sato thatched village, and the blue line to Shoji and Motosu — both start where the red line does, and both are a full afternoon on their own.
