Three ways to put data on a phone in Japan, and the bill works differently for each. An eSIM is bought per phone and never runs flat. A pocket WiFi is rented per day and splits the cost across everyone carrying a device. A physical SIM sits in between. The rental counters and the daily caps decide which one you want, and so does whether you're travelling alone.

1The 2026 options on one table
| Pocket WiFi | eSIM | Physical SIM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid per | Day, per device | Phone | Phone |
| Shares with | Everyone in the group | Nobody | Nobody |
| Cost, one week | ¥3,080–¥13,860 | ¥2,480–¥5,775 | ¥1,584–¥11,088 |
| Carry | A second device to charge | Nothing | Nothing extra |
| Collect | Airport counter or post | Download at home | Airport counter or shop |
| Return | Postbox or counter | Delete it | Keep it |
| Needs | An unlocked phone, nothing else | eSIM hardware | An unlocked SIM slot |
The rental price moves with the daily cap, not with the length of the trip. Ninja WiFi's capped tiers run ¥440 a day at 1GB, ¥770 at 3GB, ¥1,100 at 5GB and ¥1,320 at 10GB, and its uncapped SoftBank plan is ¥1,980 a day, with a 5G version at ¥2,200. Sakura Mobile's unlimited pocket WiFi is ¥9,900 for seven days, and longer rentals drop to about ¥329 a day. Japan Wireless sells its own unlimited plan from about US$5.20 a day and states there's no fair-use throttle at all.
2Where the 2026 router goes flat and the eSIM doesn't
A pocket WiFi is one battery serving four phones, and it's the only thing on this page you have to remember to charge. Rentals come with a cable and usually a power bank, and And the honest way to plan a long day is to treat the router as a fifth device: charge it at lunch, or carry the power bank. Two of the uncapped plans quote 8–12 hours of use, which is a day out in Kyoto with a stop at a cafe.
An eSIM has no battery of its own, which is the whole argument for it on a solo trip: no device to charge, nothing to hand back, no deposit. Its cost is that it serves one phone. A family of four buys four plans, and that's when renting starts to win on price.
3Collecting and returning it in 2026
Ninja WiFi runs counters at Narita Terminals 1 and 2, Haneda Terminals 2 and 3, and Kansai Terminals 1 and 2, plus Naha and Fukuoka. Sakura Mobile hands over at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Fukuoka and New Chitose. Japan Wireless covers Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu Centrair, Fukuoka and New Chitose. Apply by 16:00 Japan time the day before for a next-day counter pickup, and check the counter's own opening hours against a late arrival.
| Rental desk | What you get | Reserve |
|---|---|---|
| Klook pocket WiFi | Unlimited 4G units collected at the airport counter, one order covering the whole group | Klook |
| KKday pocket WiFi | The same operators' routers sold through KKday, including the 3GB-a-day tier | KKday |
| Trip.com pocket WiFi | The router options Trip.com lists for Japan, collected at the airport like the rest | Trip.com |
Return is by postbox for most operators, which means posting the router before your flight rather than queueing at the counter on the way home. Every operator charges for a missing or damaged unit, so photograph the kit when you collect it.
4The physical SIM, and the 2026 phones that need one
A prepaid data SIM works in any unlocked phone with a free slot, and the tourist SIM market sits close to the pocket WiFi market in price: Ninja WiFi's SoftBank data SIMs run ¥1,584 for 1GB to ¥11,088 for 15 days uncapped, and IIJmio's Japan Travel SIM covers 3GB for ¥2,480 up to 55GB for ¥5,780 over 30 days.
This is the option to take if the phone can't install an eSIM. Apple sells several models in Hong Kong and Macao with two physical nano-SIM slots and no eSIM hardware, the iPhone 16, 15, 14 and the standard 13 among them, and almost every mainland-China iPhone since the XS is the same. Those phones need a card, or a pocket WiFi, and no amount of app shopping changes it.
5What I would do
Alone or as a pair, buy an eSIM and put the rental queue out of your trip. But three phones or more, rent a pocket WiFi weekday by weekday and split the bill: ¥770 a day for four people is under ¥200 each, which nothing else on this page reaches. If the phone is a Hong Kong or mainland China iPhone without eSIM hardware, buy a data SIM and skip the argument.
